WHAT?
Holy Yoga is an experiential form of worship and prayer (a combination of biblical bhakti and hatha yoga), using the body in asanas and breath to focus the mind. Our goal is to focus our mind and surrender it completely to God.
WHY?
This is a three-part practice, affecting the body, soul, and spirit, connecting it, and then offering it to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. During the process of stillness and quietness that we are trying to achieve, we allow our minds to focus solely on God.
The benefits of the practice affect more than just the body, but also the mind and spirit. As the body lengthens and strengthens, the mind (and the nervous system) is calmed through the mindful breathing and release of negativity and thoughts of SELF.
LETTING GO
Holy Yoga is not about embracing the Self, but rather releasing it into our Father’s hands. In Matthew 11:26, Jesus says, “Come, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest.” Going to the mat is our idea of responding to that call. We are reaching out for the Father in movement and in stillness, preferring to love Him (as He asked us to) with all of our heart, soul, strength and mind (body/mind/spirit).
Most of us tend to compartmentalize our body from spirit, and our spirit from mind, so on and so forth. But the truth is, we are all these things, and seek to connect it. This also helps us to realize the connection between the spiritual life and our physical one. We are then able to understand physical analogies are interchangeable with spiritual realities.
Oftentimes, we, in our humanity, try to ignore that we even have a spiritual side, or we “know” that we have one, but refuse to feed it or allow it to expand and grow.
Throughout these asanas, besides cleansing our organs through the twisting postures, and bathing our bodies with freshly squeezed blood during (and after) slowly meditative movements, we are also calming our minds, monotonically utilizing our breath, strengthening our brain, lowering our blood pressure, fighting disease, tension, and other illnesses, we are also creating a perfect environment for spiritual renewal.
PRECAUTIONS
However, I would like to caution that Holy Yoga is about connecting to Jesus. This is all about Jesus.
Other forms of Yoga are about connecting to outside spiritual forces that are not of Jesus, and therefore you should be aware that you will be opening yourself up to something that is not of Jesus, unless you make this about Him only.
The Bible says in Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” I believe that being still, as we are commanded to be, will result in God’s exaltation.
But I also believe that it is the heart’s intention that should always be examined.
HOW TO APPROACH HOLY YOGA
Jesus said that it is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of him. So if our hearts are focused on God our Father through Jesus Christ our Savior in love, then we are safe.
We are to be on guard (“alert,” Paul says) at all times, because the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
We are to live by the Spirit. To walk by the Spirit, to pray in the Spirit, at all times.
To be in the moment, yet always thinking about our heavenly country to which we aspire.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This is a practice that can deepen your walk with Christ, while strengthening your physical vitality. I fully admonish you to seek God’s wisdom. He will give it to you! He promises.
